South Africans, help brand your country!

first_img1 June 2011The International Marketing Council of South Africa (IMC) has called on ordinary South Africans to help SA compete globally by building the country’s image and brand, and do their bit to put an end to misconceptions about the country at home and abroad. The body, which is responsible for marketing South Africa domestically and abroad, has appealed to all citizens, including business and the government, to rally behind Brand South Africa through the demonstration of ubuntu, innovation, creativity, sustainability, diversity and possibility, the five pillars of Brand South Africa. This and other pertinent issues highlighting the need for patriotism were discussed with entrepreneurs, chief executives, the government, leaders of civil society and the like at a one-day stakeholder summit in Johannesburg on Tuesday. The meeting was the first of a series of provincial summits that have been planned for the rest of the year. Limpopo province is next on the list.Dina Pule, the deputy minister in the Presidency, said the branding of South Africa was no longer a choice, but a necessity which required the concerted effort of all stakeholders to achieve “any real measure of success”.Because of the rapid advancement of globalisation, South Africa needed to fight for its share of attention and respect from the international media, governments and citizens of other countries. Pule said the country ought to re-shape its national identity to compete with other nations for power, prestige, influence and wealth, while attracting tourism and investment and creating jobs.Team South AfricaChichi Maponya, the IMC board deputy chairman, said every South African should embrace the concept of building and enhancing the nation’s brand. She urged every citizen to rally behind Team South Africa, and help the IMC to fulfil its mandate. “A nation brand is a promise made. A successful nation brand is one that is kept,” she said.Maponya encouraged all South Africans to act as national ambassadors and help debunk myths about the country, while creating new perceptions. “A nation’s brand is key to its success irrespective whether it is an advanced or developing economy,” she said. The IMC’s primary role is to develop and implement a pro-active marketing, communication and reputation management strategy for the country. It aims to attract investment and enhance tourism, trade and business with the international community. Its long-term goals include making South Africa a top 20 brand and a top 30 globally competitive nation by 2020.“To achieve this we need every member of Team SA to align their business and marketing strategies as far as possible with the objectives of building a strong, reputable nation brand for South Africa,” said Maponya. She noted that the inclusion of South Africa in the BRICS alliance of emerging countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – placed the nation at the “cutting edge of a new global paradigm, which could help reach consensus on issues such as trade, poverty reduction, the global financial system, and the growing tensions around limited resources”.Brand South AfricaThe IMC board chairman, Anitha Soni, said rallying behind Brand South Africa was “easy”.“Share your innovations and creativity, partner with brand South Africa on their programmes. Create sustainable initiatives that depict who we are as a nation, and what the future we co-create looks like. Build South Africa for us to live and develop in, a South Africa known internationally for its ability to easily do business with and ultimately a South Africa with a sustainable competitive advantage,” Soni explained. The IMC was established in 2002 as an agency of the state charged with creating a positive image of South Africa. It has several ways that people can help make South Africa great:Create the reality of global competitiveness;Identify and leverage symbolic events, people and places to communicate South Africa’s identity and reputation;Provide clear, believable and positive communication of what South Africa really is, what it stands for and its vision;Stimulate relevant and critical innovations;Create harmony and co-ordination to tell the same powerful, believable and interesting story about South Africa; andNourish confidence, pride, harmony, ambition and national resolve to enhance the national Active Citizenship Mobilisation Campaign.Source: City of Johannesbrglast_img read more

Google Makes World Bank Data More Discoverable: Takes a Swipe at Wolfram Alpha

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts Tags:#Google#Microsoft#news#web Google just announced that it now uses public data from the World Bank to display graphs for queries like “children per woman in brazil” or “internet users in the united states.” To do so, Google makes uses of the World Bank’s public API. Through this, Google can access 17 World Development Indicators. Google displays this data in interactive graphs that make it easy to compare stats for different countries. The timing of this announcement was likely planned to coincide with the news about Wolfram Alpha’s integration with Microsoft’s Bing. Google vs. WolframEarlier this year, Google also added data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population Division to its search results page. The queries that Google showcases in today’s blog post (gdp of a country, internet users in the US or energy use in Iceland) are exactly the kind of queries where Wolfram Alpha excels. Currently, Bing doesn’t display this kind of data from Wolfram Alpha and just focuses on math and nutrition, but a deeper integration between the two is just a matter of time. Wolfram Alpha uses curated data sets – just like the World Bank or Census Bureau data – to compute its results. Google’s current use of this data is less ambitious. Google wants to make public data more accessible – Wolfram Alpha wants to be a ‘computational knowledge engine’ that can manipulate these data sets. Google Wants Your Public DataOne interesting aspect of today’s blog post is that Google points out that there are “still many other data sets and sources out there, and we’re excited about the possibilities for the future.” Google also asks data publishers who are interested in making their data discoverable in Google to contact the company. In the current implementation, Google can display results for the following types of questions: CO2 emissions per capita, Electricity consumption per capita, Energy use per capita, Exports as percentage of GDP, Fertility rate, GDP deflator change, GDP growth rate, GNI per capita in PPP dollars, Gross Domestic Product, Gross National Income in PPP dollars, Imports as percentage of GDP, Internet users as percentage of population, Life expectancy, Military expenditure as percentage of GDP, Mortality rate, under 5, Population, and Population growth rate. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… frederic lardinoislast_img read more

Energy Star Homes Must Comply with Version 3 Guidelines Now

first_imgSince the Energy Star team first released the Version 3 guidelines over two years ago, they made several revisions and have adjusted the implementation schedule. Currently, they’re up to Revision 5 of Version 3, and some items have been delayed, but Version 3 kicked in for good on Sunday. Really! If the house you’re hoping to qualify for Version 2.5 was permitted before 2012 and had its final inspection by the end of Saturday, 30 June 2012, you’re golden. If you’ve slopped over into July, it’s Version 3 for you!I’ve included the Energy Star Version 3 implementation schedule graphic here, and you can see that since we’re now in July, it’s all Version 3, no matter when the house was permitted or finished. What to watch out forSo, now that it’s really here, what are the big issues with qualifying new homes under Energy Star Version 3? There are a few, and they add up. We’ve qualified a lot of V2.5 homes and a few V3 homes through Energy Vanguard Energy Ratings, our HERS rating providership, and here are three obstacles that we’re seeing:Bath fans – Energy Star Version 3 requires bath fans to be able to exhaust 50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) of air. The HERS rater has to measure it, too, so when builders put in 50 cfm bath fans, they’re probably not going to pass. The typical bath fan moves only half its rated air flow, so a 50 cfm fan generally won’t cut it for Energy Star. One problem is the duct that makes an immediate 180° turn (as shown in the photo below), but there are other reasons bath fans underperform, too.HVAC contractors – Energy Star Version 3 expects a lot of HVAC contractors. On the whole, they had great difficulty with the minimal V2 program requirements (Manual J, properly sized cooling system, coils matched according to AHRI standards). Now they have to do full HVAC design and commissioning and get certified through the Quality Assurance program of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). The fees for that are over $1000 to get started and then about $820 per year (not including ACCA membership) to continue. Not many have done it yet. There are only 12 Georgia HVAC contractors listed on the ACCA website as of today. Even in Texas, which has probably had more homes qualify for Energy Star than any other state, only 63 HVAC contractors are listed.Cost – Energy Star has a document that shows their projections for the extra costs and savings (pdf) associated with qualifying a home for Version 3 versus having it meet the 2009 IECC. They say it will cost a home builder in the range of about $3500 to over $9000, depending on location, to qualify for Energy Star Version 3. The problem is that the builder doesn’t realize the savings; the homeowner does. Also, they’re comparing Version 3 costs to the costs to build to the 2009 IECC, which not everyone is doing yet.Of course, these aren’t the only things that builders are balking at and getting stuck on. The requirement that all homes must have mechanical ventilation systems and Grade I insulation installation (or continuous insulation) are a couple of others. So, now that the new guidelines are here, what happens next? Energy Star Version 3 is no longer an entry level energy efficiency program. Getting the Energy Star label on your home will be a lot more meaningful now that Version 3 is mandatory. What are you seeing out in the field? Builders, are you sticking with the program? HVAC contractors, why aren’t you jumping in yet? HERS raters, what other hangups have you found? RELATED ARTICLES Efficiency Programs Struggle to Stay Ahead of Energy Codes The Energy Star Homes Program Raises the Bar with Version 3Energy Star Version 3 Version 2 had a fixed HERS Index requirement of 85 (or 80 in the far North); Version 3 has a variable HERS Index target, which is usually in the low 70s.Version 2 had one checklist for the HERS rater: Version 3 has 4 checklists: 2 for the HERS rater, 1 for the HVAC contractor, and 1 for the home builder.Large houses have to get to a lower HERS Index because of the new Size Adjustment Factor. All parts of the building envelope must have Grade I insulation or continuous insulation. All Version 3 homes must have mechanical ventilation systems that meet the requirements of ASHRAE 62.2.center_img On the 1st of this month, the Energy Star new homes program moved fully (well, almost) into the much more rigorous set of guidelines called Version 3. There’s been a lot of discussion on the the transition for the past three years, when the Energy Star team at the U.S. EPA first started vetting the update with HERS raters and home builders. In case you’ve ignored or haven’t heard much about it yet, here’s a quick overview of what’s new: Allison Bailes of Decatur, Georgia, is a RESNET-accredited energy consultant, trainer, and the author of the Energy Vanguard blog.last_img read more

Stone-laying becomes Haryana CM Bhajan Lal’s principal occupation

If he were half as good at delivering as he is at promising Haryana would become the first five-star state in the nation. In,Going by the number of foundation stones that today litter the Haryana countryside, it’s Chief Minister, Bhajan Lal, is one of the most promising politicians in India. If he were half as good at delivering as he is at promising Haryana would become the first five-star state in the nation. In the first three months of this year alone Bhajan Lal and his ministers have laid 60 foundation stones, promised twice as many projects worth crores of rupees and vowed to upgrade schools by the dozen. On January 22 Bhajan Lal promised a grant of Rs 50,000 for a mini-stadium at Sports Minister Jagan Nath’s village, Isharwal. The day after that he granted a lakh of rupees for a municipal committee building and half a lakh for a school. On February 11, in the chief minister’s Adampur constituency he laid eight foundation stones for canal brick-lining, minor irrigation works and a health centre. Next day he announced six health centres for Baddopal, Mohammadpur Rohi (his ancestral village), Jhalanian, Bordhana, Nahla and Dhansu. And the day after that, on the eve of the visit of Lok Dal leader Charan Singh and Jagjivan Ram, he visited 13 villages of Hissar district and promised grants ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 for the construction of chaupals, street paving and primary schools. He had no time to lay the foundation stones.More Projects: But less than a week later he was out with his trowel again, laying foundation stones for a Rs 1.5 crore grain market and a Rs 50,000 court complex at Jagadhri, a water supply scheme near Rohtak, a school and a bridge. In between masonry jobs he launched a Harijan chaupal and promised to upgrade two schools.advertisementBhajan Lal at a ceremony: Stony groundIt would appear that stone-laying has become Bhajan Lal’s principal occupation. Sirsa district has been virtually sprayed with foundation stones: a water scheme and tehsil complex at Dabwali, a civil hospital at Chautala, waterworks at Khera, a 20-bed hospital, a grain market and a girls, high school for Nathusari Chopta, another girls, high school for Charwala and piped drinking water for all the 41 arid-zone villages of Darba Assembly constituency and Harijan dharamshalas in two dozen villages.Where does the state exchequer get the money for all this? It doesn’t. Most of the projects are still just foundation stones – except in his own home town of Adampur which has acquired a 30-bed, well-equipped hospital, a degree college, an administrative complex, a housing colony, bus stand, a posh, marbled rest house and an electricity sub-station. It is a treat to see the Adampur new market where Bhajan Lal and his business partner, Pokhar Mai run a commission agent’s shop. Known as the mini-chief minister, Pokhar Mai occasionally stands in for his partner at foundation stone-laying ceremonies. He laid one recently for a kisan rest house.Near Adampur, Fatehabad boasts of a 60-bed hospital, a new tehsil complex and a bus stand. Critics point out that Fatehabad is populated mainly by Bishnois, the chief minister’s caste-fellows, but Bhajan Lal stoutly denies that the village has been favoured for that reason. With Assembly elections approaching the chief minister is working overtime at distributing verbal largesse. Whether he is visiting a dusty village or a bustling town, Bhajan Lal refuses nothing. He says “so be it” to whatever people ask of him and goes on to throw in a school or a health centre on the side.In fact his “jo mange manzoor” (anything you say) approach has earned him the nickname Manzoori Lal. But as a resident of Meham village near Rohtak noted, “What remains of the promises is the dust which his speeding caravan of cars leaves behind.”last_img read more
